I Want a Rerun for Christmas Charlie Brown
What the fuck is this crap? Growing up...I couldn't wait for all the holiday classics...Rudolph...Frosty...The Grinch...A Charlie Brown Christmas. But I was horrified when we turned on the TV the other night and there was good old Charlie Brown...but this time something was different. He wasn't pining away for the Little Red Haired Girl. He wasn't doing much of anything actually. There was this other character...a new character if that's possible...or just one I've never heard of before. His name was Rerun. Rerun, apparently is Lucy and Linus's annoying little bastard brother. His name was Rerun...I know...stupid. And that's all he did was repeat (or RERUN) the same thing throught the whole show, "I want a dog for Christmas"..."Can your dog come out and play with me Charlie Brown"? It was stupid...stupid...stupid. Can't they just leave the classics alone?! It's like Disney making a sequel to Cinderella and Bambi...it isn't necessary! But they do it...they beat a good thing into the ground until it's pasty and mushy awful. Just once...can't they create something good and not ruin it? I'm still waiting for E.T. 2...you know it's coming and you know it's going to suck.

Ok, conceded that the newer Peanuts Christmas special is nowhere near as good as the original. But...
(a) Rerun is an actual Peanuts character from the hand of Charles Schultz, not something made up in a programming conference. As one of the recent creations, he doesn't have as much background. Being terrified on his mother's bike is one of the few things attributed to him, so that pretty much had to go in.
(b) The show was supposed to be a few postcards (vignettes) of characters. Naturally, that meant that Charlie Brown had only a walk-on role most of the time. And each segment had to be pretty well focused on one idea--like "I want a dog." Think it's a stupid idea? Your privilege. But don't knock it for keeping focused on what it was intended to be about.
Besides, nothing stands up to comparison with Snow Miser and Heat Miser. The Miser Brothers rule!
OK, Fair enough...I still think it's a stupid idea, but at least Rerun isn't a new character. Last night we stumbled across "Frosty Returns"...where Frosty takes a wife named Crystal who comes to life through Christmas love when Frosty places a bouqet in her arms. Oh...and because she loves Frosty back, he no longer needs to magic hat. Is anyone else GAGGING here?
I thought Rerun was the fat guy that used to hang out with Roger and Dwayne on "What's Happening!" Actually, I do vaguely remember that there was a Rerun VanPelt in the comic strip. I just thought that they sometimes showed him in lieu of Linus... sort of a substitute little brother. I don't remember ever seeing him and Linus together. Now I want to watch the Charlie Brown Christmas movie.
Did you ever notice that when the dentist forgets to remove the nitrous that the dental assistants, dentist, etc. all start sounding like the adults on Peanuts? Maybe I won't watch the CBC movie. It might trigger dental flashbacks.
Pretty much anyone that doesn't agree with my opinion sounds like the adults on Peanuts...well...to me anyway.
:-P
