Survival Skills

Katharine:

I am 31 years old. I met Jeff when I was 29. So for approximately 11 years (figuring that I moved out of my parent's house at 18 when I went to college), I have been taking care of myself. I lived on my own for 4 years, and this meant that I cooked my own food, paid the bills, kept house, you know, all the normal everyday things that people do in day to day life. Sometimes though, I think Jeff forgets that I had this previous existence. For example, we'll be paying the bills and Jeff will look over my check writing to make sure it's correct. Like I've never written a check before... and am a little unsteady about how the procedure works. Also, when I make the bed, I have the blankets and sheets, upside side down. That way when you pull the sheets back you can see the pretty pattern, or the nice blanket. Does anyone else do that?? Jeff has lived 30+ years and he claims that he's never seen it before. In fact, Jeff says that he's really unsure just how I managed to get through that time when I was single. He says the thought of it frightens him. Chills him to the very core. I should point out though, that before Jeff I was skinnier... which actually doesn't say much for the before mentioned cooking skills.

Jeff:

Heh...OK...she's got me on some of that, but not without reason. Allow me to explain myself. She said I look over her shoulder when she writes checks...that's only true with the mortgage check. Can I tell you that we both use online banking; Katharine has no trouble transferring money from our joint account to her personal account...but the other direction...no can do. Maybe that's on purpose. Cooking skills...Katharine makes the best baked goods and lasagne. And...and...and...well...baked goods and lasagne. When she was single...apparently, she called for takeout quite often. I wasn't there, but this is the way I understand it. And the sheets...well, that's just different than I've ever seen it done. Doesn't mean that it's wrong. I learned how to make a bed in the millitary and this was not the technique they used. According to Katharine I should have seen this before because...ahem...I've been in and out of my share...I'm not sure where she got that impression...uhm...anyway...

Remember when I was young enough to date a 29 year old?

Project Overload

I got two phone calls yesterday...friends that were concerned about my last couple of posts...the perceived anger in them. OK...nothing was perceived...I was pissed when I wrote them. I spoke with one of them last night for almost 2 hrs (you know who you are) and one of the things we discussed...aside from the fact that I don't need anger management treatment, was the number of projects we were each working on...and I'm not talking about "at work" projects. Personal projects that tend to add up as time goes by.

I'm working on SO many projects...I wonder if anyone else has put this kind of pressure on themselves as well. Currently, in my spare time (which is really like having "spare change"...I'm working on the following projects, which I'll put in list format.

1) Weekly cartoon updates. Some of you have seen them...some of you don't read them...but either way, I'm working on them.

2) The 4th Alfred, Unibrow, and the Big Headed Boy movie, which some of you participated in. Half done.

3) I'm writing a book. Pure fiction. Been working on it for a year. It's called "Part One of a Sequel" and so far it's 18 pages.

4) Watching one TV series at a time on DVD. I know most of you won't see that as a project...but it is when DVDs are a hobby. Currently it's Battlestar Galactica, but I'm on the last disc so that'll switch from a project to a TiVO recording soon.

5) World of Warcraft...again...it's a game, but it's a project to reach Level 60.

6) I'm taking a Master Certificate program in Graphic Design at Sessions.edu. What the hell am I going to do with that? Don't know...but I'm taking it anyway...past year and a half.

7) Books...contrary to popular opinion, I CAN and DO read. I'm currently reading 3 different books: POWERS Vol 9 by Brian Bendis, Iterations by Robert J Sawyer, and YOU: The Owner's Manual : An Insider's Guide to the Body that Will Make You Healthier and Younger. I don't read so fast...

And let's not forget I want to spend time with Katharine and we're planning a wedding!

See...I'm busy...what are your projects? Comments!

Reporting Live from the World of Warcraft

The Gates of Ahn'Qiraj are open and I am here, reporting to you live...or at least I was until I was booted from the server for the 6th time. I'm talking about World of Warcraft and the special event that didn't really take place about 30 minutes ago because nobody could really play. Thanks for that Blizzard...thanks for making sure your servers could handle the load.

Got Quality? (Part Deux)

For those that didn't get enought the first time, and to prove that I speak some French...I present, Part Deux of a multi part series on the crap we need to put up with when we buy any thing or any service.

First of all...I finally received my new TiVO unit from Best Buy after 2 months of waiting. I called Best Buy Friday afternoon and I was told that 2 units were to be delivered Friday evening. I called back Friday evening to find that those two units were indeed delivered...I wanted them to assure me that one of them would be there when I arrived to swap mine. I was on hold for 30 minutes waiting for the answer when I hung up and called back. I had to hang up, because I was getting in the car to actually go to Best Buy. Called back...another 15 minutes on hold. I had to tell my story 4 times to 4 different people before an hour went by and SOMEONE was willing to hold one of those suckers at customer service. When I arrived...both of the customer service girls were quite bitchy and wouldn't even give me the box to carry my new unit home in because I didn't bring the box with me for the old one. They kept all the cables...they were going to keep all the remote control batteries...Geez Best Buy...are you hurting that bad?

I'm using my new Alienware laptop to write this post, but oddly I'm typing on a Dell keyboard. Why is this you ask? My Alienware is...well...it's pretty fucked. Four days of ownership and the NVIDIA video card no longer works...only the onboard video works. I spent an hour on the phone with Alienware to determine that the video card wasn't the only problem. THEN they asked me to do a BIOS upgrade...if you're not familiar with a BIOS upgrade...don't worry about it. Just know that following the BIOS upgrade...I can no longer use the laptop keyboard. Alienware wants me to send the laptop back to them...they'll have to format the hard drive, which I spent 3 days installing software and copying data to...I don't think so...if I send it back...it's a return. A supervisor will call me on Tuesday. So far, the coolest thing about Alienware is this:

Coming soon...the rest of the story.

Potty Mouth

If we ever decide to have kids, adopt kids, grow kids in a Petri dish...whatever...which could happen sometime in the next 50 years...they're going to have the WORST potty mouths! I can't drive a mile down the road without calling some idiot a motherf*cker...and that's tame compared to some of the words that come out...I don't want to offend anyone here so I won't repeat those. Can you imagine if I had kids in the back seat...even if they're not facing forward, they can still hear me.

Everyone says that you're more careful what you say around kids...I know you all mean well, but I'm sorry...if someone cuts me off in traffic...they're motherf*ckers and everyone in my car needs to hear about it. SOMETIMES...the window is open and others hear about it. That's when things get crazy.

Got Quality?

This is going to be a rant, so beware....this is as close to a parental advisory that I'm going to get.

When a company tells you that they have quality control...do you believe them? I used to, but my faith in the American company is slowly fading away. You can't do anything, order anything, or visit anywhere without a problem. A hassle...a reason that every company seems to give you to call them and tell them that they fucked up. The oil company...Eastern Propane...have to remind them to fill the tank. The doctors office...all of them...got to remind them that you're waiting for them to get off their lazy non-caring asses to make you an appointment. The mortgage company...that would be Countrywide Mortgage...who decides one day that they're going to double your mortgage payment one day. The William fucking Shatner DVD club who insists that they sent out the discs at the beginning of last week and it's because of the post office that I didn't get anything yet. The post office that can't deliver a fucking letter to the right person (which is presumably why e-mail is more popular every day). And finally...the computer company...today that would be Alienware (who I'll hopefully have better things to say about in a few days), that sends you the wrong cable after your new laptop spends a full two days in quality control.

What quality you ask? If you ask me...it's out of control.

UPDATE: Fuck Best Buy too because they can't keep a product in stock or replace my broken warranty item! Fuck 'em!

UPDATE AGAIN AS THEY KEEP COMING TO ME: Did I mention that Sirius Radio fucked me on a rebate when I followed their instructions to the letter? And their customer service rep even agreed with me...too bad he had no contact information to help me work it out with the rebate people.

Snow Blows

It's been a quiet winter, but today changed all that...the snow started at 2am and is just starting to wind down now leaving more than 2 foot deep drifts in our yard. Monty wanted to go out...and then he wanted to come in. We almost lost him once or twice...he didn't know what to expect. He's trying to run back to the house here, but the damn gate is in his way. Damn gate. Bad gate.

You know...this summer when it's all warm outside...people are going to say, "phew, that was a harsh winter". And that'll be a lie...it's been a fairly easy winter...not too cold. But someone is going to say it. Well...they might not say "phew".

What's on the SURFACE?

Has anyone seen the best new show on TV? I know...I said this a couple of months ago and I was talking about LOST. LOST is still good, although Katharine has decided to not watch it...but to ask me for a synopsis each week after I watch it. Almost like a book report.

Last night was the season finale of SURFACE and it was fantastic. A 15 episode season that answered many of the season's important questions...they didn't drag you into season 2 without resolution. If the show ends after that episode, fans will be satisfied. OK...I'll probably be annoyed and never watch an NBC show again. Like FOX...FOX fucked any fan that watched REUNION by ending a murder mystery series with no resolution and then announcing who the killer was with no explanation. Good thing SURFACE is on NBC. I don't think there's anything on FOX that I care to watch now because they fucked me. If you've never seen SURFACE...here is one of the main characters:

I want one...even though his larger relatives have killed millions. Everyone has one or two flaws. What are yours?

Easy Come, Easy Go

For about an hour this afternoon I had $479.87 of someone else's money in my checking account...and now it's gone. I'm sure you're wondering how this happened...and if you're not, stop reading and go the hell away.

Apparently, someone in my HR department got confused and deposited someone else's travel reimbursement to my account. I looked at the notice, tilting my head like a dog that doesn't understand what you're saying...stared at the notice some more...wondering for about 15 seconds if I should say anything...if I should just keep the money because it really didn't belong to that other person yet...and then my rational side took over and I called the inquire. OK, really...I knew they would figure it out eventually and I'd have to give it back. So, I called...they're going to take it away...and as a reward (I guess), I found $10 on the ground. Gee karma...thanks for the prize.

Friggin Jeeves

I went to "Ask Jeeves" a question and he was watching the damn Superbowl...

Best F*cking Ribs Ever!

That's right...I finally cracked open those Corkys Riblets that I hesitantly bought from QVC...they were the best pork ribs that I've ever eaten. EVER! No lie...everyone that likes pork ribs should go online and get them right away. If you don't have them for your SuperBowl party then you're a crappy host...they rock! Two riblets and I'm full. FULL! QVC did not pay me for this endorsement, although they should. Cheap bastards.

Give Me Back My Change!

OK, I know it's first thing in the morning, but I have to bitch about something that's happened to me twice this week. Picture this...you walk into Dunkin' Donuts, you purchase a medium coffee for $1.77. That's it...just a coffee. The cashier rings you up and tosses your change in the tip jar. What the fuck!!?? That's MY 23 cents and I fucking want it back right now. NOW! Give me back my change! This morning, the guy says..."I thought you walked away." Nope...right here. Standing in front of you. Maybe it's time to get that eyeglass prescription checked...except he wasn't wearing glasses. I just shook my head and walked away, but the next time I think about throwing a dollar in that tip jar, I'll save it for a comic book.

Goatee or Not Goatee

Ever see that "Mirror Image" episode of the original Star Trek series where all the familiar characters were evil? You could only tell the difference between good Spock and evil Spock because evil Spock had a goatee. Here's my version of the evil goatee. Love it or hate it...I'll only have it for a month or two and then it'll be gone for another year. Which do you like better?
